Guidance Notes
Campaign PowerPoint
These notes have been created as a guide to assist you in delivering a short presentation.
Should you be given an opportunity to present to a local authority, they normally allow a short time (3 to 5 minutes) to get the message across.
These notes are succinct and cover most areas. Graphic images have been left out, but please ensure if you decide to use such images, you give a visual and verbal warning.
Should you want to add local examples to the presentation, that would be advantageous but please keep your presentation factual and within the ethos of this campaign.
Slide One
2025 is the year that, together, we can make a huge difference to stop the unnecessary pain and suffering to our seals.
Slide Two
Each year 1000s of these imported flying rings are sold around the UK.
This major store is selling them for £1.49p each but we know that the wholesale cost to the retailer is on average 33p per ring.
They are cheap to buy and often get lost or discarded on our local beaches or near waterways.
Slide Three
Across the entire UK these are found on our beaches.
Slide Four
They have no boundaries and will float wherever the tide takes them.
Slide Five
This unsuspecting Mum and her nearby pup are just a few metres away from danger that will cause them a lifetime of pain and misery.
Slide Six
Seals, especially the younger ones, are extremely curious and playful.
A floating flying ring in the sea is a new toy, a plaything to explore.
Their natural curiosity will soon turn into a nightmare when these rings get entangled over their heads and necks…they cannot untangle themselves and as they grow, these rings tighten causing immense pain and suffering.
Slide Seven
Eventually, they will die
Slide Eight
Most entangled seals will never be rescued but those luckily enough to be rescued, like this one in the photograph, will undergo many months of rehabilitation in a wildlife hospital.
A charity like the RSPCA state that a seal entangled in a flying ring will cost them between £10,000 to £15,000 per adult seal to rehabilitate.
This enormous amount has resulted from a flying ring costing just 33 pence.
Slide Nine
So, what can you do to stop misery-making flying rings from causing more pain and suffering?
Slide Ten
Our campaign volunteers have been working hard, visiting shops across the UK asking them to stop selling flying rings and switch to selling the seal safe alternative…the solid disc frisbee, preferably non-plastic.
These solid disc frisbees have been around since the 1930s and actually they fly/perform better than the flying ring.
Leading retailers such as Tesco, Pets at Home, Halfords, Sainsburys, and many others, are supporting our campaign and no longer sell flying rings.
Many smaller retailers have followed suit and now only sell solid disc frisbees.
Local Councils across the UK are voting unanimously to pursue a voluntary ban on the sale and purchase of these flying rings
Are you willing to follow other Councils who are leading the way and standing up against animal suffering?
Slide Eleven
We are urging the UK Government to ban the import and sale of these flying rings to protect our precious marine wildlife from harm.
Our petition is gathering growing support across the world, so please support us in banning these lethal items.
We need your support so please ‘SAVE OUR SEALS FROM FLYING RINGS’
I’ll be more than happy to answer any of your questions.
Conclusion
Ensure you take along with you a flying ring and a solid disc frisbee to enhance your presentation delivery.
Also, your contact details are most important and please encourage Councillors to contact you direct for further information.
Always leave the audience with a positive mindset that clearly conveys that they can make a difference by taking action and supporting the campaign.
Thank You
